Iron Infusion No. 2 - Prepping the IV Bag

August 22, 20252 min read

It’s time for my second iron infusion to boost my ferritin.

In my 2nd iron infusion for my iron deficiency, I’m going to do the full dose of iron - 100 milligrams, which is the entire vial of iron sucrose.

History Lesson:

For a long time, iron was mostly done via IM or intramuscular injection. But it did come with a risk of permanent tattoos because of the color of it. And in the last couple decades, iron infusions have become more popular.

Iron sucrose (Venofer) is the safest option that comes with the least amount of side effects and risks.

What to Expect:

I’m finding the infusion drip through in under 30 minutes which is great because you don’t have to sit for a long time.

I haven’t noticed any discomfort in my arm, and no negative effects so far. I sometimes taste a smokey, mapley flavour as the IV is going.

What I’ve Noticed:

I'll give you an update on how my week went.

Between iron infusion #1 (LINK) and this one, I felt really good

  • I felt strong.

  • I felt like I was recovering well from workouts.

  • I had two busy nights salsa dancing in a row, and also went on a pretty vigorous hike the next day. And I didn't feel tired or pooped after any of those things.

  • I felt like my memory was a bit better.

  • I also feel like my brain function was better.

  • There was more focus.

  • I feel like there was a better recall.

  • My sleep, though, was a bit off, but that could have been the timing point of my cycle. And also that it's summertime and it's a more energetically active time of year.

  • Because I track my daily weight, I have noticed my weigh’s been up a couple pounds in the last week or so. It could be a marker of that inflammatory connection that I was talking about in the last video -  a very acute response to the treatment. I was also testing some new foods so I could have been reacting to them. Also the weight might have been up because the sleep was a little bit down.

All of these factors matter, and, throw in stress, and it's the perfect salad for a little bit of increase!

I’m loving my iron infusions so far!
